Reporting Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation

In Case of Immediate Danger

If someone is in immediate danger due to abuse, neglect, or exploitation, call 911 first. Emergency responders and law enforcement are trained to handle urgent situations.

Mandatory Reporting

Anyone who knows or reasonably suspects that a person with an intellectual or developmental disability is being abused, neglected, or exploited by a relative, caregiver, or household member or, in the case of self-neglect, by themselves, must report it to the Florida Abuse Hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE (or 1-800-962-2873).

Failure to report known or suspected cases of abuse, neglect, or exploitation is a crime. For service providers, it may also lead to termination or legal action. When in doubt, report. Reports should be made regardless of how long ago the incident occurred.

What to Expect When You Call the Abuse Hotline

Hotline staff may ask for:

  • Name, age, physical description, and location of each individual at risk
  • Names and contact information of each alleged perpetrator
  • Your name and contact information (you may remain anonymous)
  • A description of the suspected abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation
  • Any actions already taken (i.e. contacting law enforcement)

You do not need all this information to make a report. Call with any details you have to help ensure the individual’s safety.

Client on Client Abuse

Sexual assault or physical violence resulting in injury (e.g., punching, choking, stabbing, or use of objects as weapons) must be reported to the Florida Abuse Hotline immediately.
Service providers must also:

  • Notify their supervisor right away
  • Contact the local Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) office to ensure safety and proper follow-up
